Sleep Apnea Treatment

Are you or a loved one suffering from sleep apnea? This disorder is often misconstrued as snoring, when in fact, it is far more serious. Individuals with this disorder repeatedly stop breathing during their sleep. These pauses can last for a few seconds or up to a few minutes, inhibiting the body from receiving enough oxygen. Apnea-related disruptions can occur hundreds of times over the course of a single sleep.

What Causes Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is normally induced by a blocked airway caused by oversized tonsils, a receding jaw, the tongue, soft tissues in the mouth, or the throat closing down and blocking airflow. The first sign of sleep apnea is usually loud snoring and literal gasps for air.

Custom Oral Sleep Appliances

Oral sleep appliances are an effective solution for managing sleep apnea, designed to maintain the lower jaw in a precise, open, and forward position. This innovative approach prevents the soft tissues in the throat and neck from collapsing, ensuring uninterrupted breathing throughout the night. At Pierpan Dentistry, we create custom oral appliances tailored specifically to fit your mouth, providing you with a comfortable alternative to traditional CPAP machines. Utilizing state-of-the-art imaging technology, we ensure your jaw is held in the optimal position for effective treatment. Many patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea prefer oral sleep appliances due to their lightweight, less restrictive design, making them ideal for home use or travel. Additionally, these appliances are virtually noiseless, ensuring a peaceful night for you and your bed partner. Most medical insurance plans and Medicare typically cover the cost of oral sleep appliances, making them an accessible option for those struggling with sleep apnea and primary snoring. Trust Pierpan Dentistry in Hampstead, NC to help you achieve restful sleep with our customized oral sleep appliance therapy.

CPAP sleep apnea treatment pump

CPAP

CPAP is the traditional treatment for sleep apnea. It stands for Continuous Positive Air Pressure. This system consists of a machine which pumps air continuously into a nasal mask that is strapped to the patient’s head during sleep. For some patients, this machine can be uncomfortable, but it is a highly effective method for improving sleep and treating sleep apnea. For patients suffering from severe sleep apnea, this is the best option.

Technology

Eccovision Acoustic Diagnostic Imaging System

To test our patients nasal and oral airways, we use the Eccovision Acoustic Pharyngometer / Rhinometer system from Sleep Group Solutions to test our patients nasal and oral airways. It uses sound waves to measure how big the airway is. The Pharyngometer measures the oral airway and the Rhinometer measures the nasal airway.

These systems are FDA cleared and are a highly effective tool to identify the severity and site and airway collapse related to sleep-related breathing and snoring problems.

Ares Apnea Risk Evaluation System

An overnight sleep test is required to be diagnosed with sleep apnea. In the past, this meant a patient would visit a sleep center or sleep lab for an overnight study at the facility. This was an inconvenient and costly procedure that most patients would prefer to avoid. To increase patient comfort, we use the ARES system. This take home system is as easy to wear as a baseball cap and records detailed information about sleep-related breathing events and sleep quality. This data is used to provide a diagnosis.
